We recently celebrated the 2-year anniversary of our empowerment project in Peru. It was a truly amazing day filled with speeches, cake, and volleyball!
The celebration began with each lady sharing what she had personally accomplished within the last two years. Some ladies talked about how rewarding learning to knit has been for them, while others shared stories of the personal growth they have experienced. Blake Goodfellow, the KKPeru Country Director, also shared a few words to celebrate the work that has been done over the last two years while looking ahead to the progress yet to come.
Then it was time for the main event: the First Annual KKP Volleyball Tournament! The tournament, which lasted almost five hours, was quite the spectacle. Each team was composed of beneficiaries, staff and interns (HINT: apply for our international internships HERE). One group of ladies even went so far as to create team shirts! As the game progressed, neighbors gathered on their doorsteps to watch and cheer.
While the tournament (and yes, the awarding of a trophy) was a great way to celebrate, the event was so much more. It was a way to recognize the significance of KKPeru's impact and honor the women who dedicate themselves to working hard and creating change. While we look with gratitude and pride on the last two years spent in Peru, we look forward to the work that will be accomplished in the coming ones.
